Charta Story & Charter 77 in pictures

The National Gallery in Prague, in collaboration with the Jan Patočka Archive, the Václav Havel Library and Libri Prohibiti have organized, at Palazzo Salmovský, the exhibitions “Charta 77 in photos” and “Charta Story” to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the signing of the Charta 77 document. The first, through photographs by Bohdan Holomíček, Ondřej Němec, Jiří Bednář and other photographers, captures the atmosphere of that period and of the unofficial culture. The Charta Story, instead, starts from a short story by the Czech underground poet Ivan Jirous and through photographs, writings and personal objects, it introduces us to the stories of people from different social circles, but united by a common adherence to the spirit of the text that, signed by intellectuals such as Václav Havel and Jan Patočka, demanded respect for human rights.

Havel

The Prague DOX museum is celebrating what would have been Václav Havel’s eightieth birthday with a large collection of photographs. Over three hundred snapshots from photographers Tomki Němec and Bohdan Holomíček, who immortalized historic and private moments in the life of the playwright, politician and citizen Havel. Němec, the official photographer of the President, will present his book during the exhibition: “Václav Havel – Tomki Němec – Photographs”. Holomíček, who photographed the protagonists of the dissent, met Havel and his wife Olga in the 70s, and captured many social and cultural events organized by the couple on film. In addition to photos, a new documentary by director Petr Jančárek recounts the last years of life of the president. There is also no shortage of evenings of film and literary-musical debate.
